Ten years ago, Frances’s older sister Charley, a star of the modern dance world, fell in love with a trust fund artist named Johnny and married him. Not four years later, Charley mysteriously quit dance, joined an enclosed convent in Provence, and changed her name to Sister Anne. 

Frances—a dancer herself, always in the shadow of her brilliant sister—has long believed that Johnny had something to do with her sister’s abrupt abandonment of her art and family. And so when Frances hears that Johnny has returned to New York, she reaches out to him, seeking a confrontation. The two plunge into an ambiguous intimacy, then a psychosexual relationship, as each tries to unlock the other's secrets.
